WE WANT TO MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON YOU AND
LESS OF AN IMPACT ON THE ENVIRONMENT
At Habitat HQ we take the green road for a more sustainable habitat. We stick to Earth Check standards on energy efficiency and emissions. Our commitment to eliminate carbon output and to educate staff and guests alike on reducing environmental impact has been recognised internationally by the STAY WYSE Green Initiative Award. We are also certified Climate Action Leaders, which acknowledges our dedication to the reduction of carbon emissions in the tourism industry in Australia.
MAKE A MEANINGFUL IMPACT
JOIN US TO HELP
PROTECT THE BAY
The Port Phillip Bay is one of the reasons Melbourne is such a special destination. We decided to take action to protect it, and we believe you can help us too! For this reason, we partnered with Port Phillip EcoCentre and their Baykeeper Program. Together, we have crafted monthly activities for our guests looking for memorable experiences:
Guided by one HabitatHQ staff member, head to St Kilda pier with other guests to meet with an EcoCentre Baykeeper Volunteer. Spend the morning learning about the Little Urban Penguin Colony and the Bay; help to keep their habitat safe and healthy by planting native plants and collecting rubbish. The satisfaction of helping the little penguins is not the only reward, as a picnic lunch is also provided!
In this special evening, learn how native Australian vegetation is traditionally used for food and medicinal purposes by Aboriginal people. Even better, try yourself the TEAS and PESTO made of these plants!
They are freshly prepared on site by an Eco Centre Baykeeper Volunteer and the Habitat HQ staff
WE ARE THE FIRST
HOSTEL IN MELBOURNE
We have offset the balance of our carbon output through the purchase of carbon offsets from certified programs. Your stay helps us continue on these programs; however, if you wish to be more involved, you can donate $1 during your check-in to add a leaf to our donations tree. We have also minimised our carbon footprint with the following initiatives:
EVERY ACTION MATTERS; WE ARE NOW
PLASTIC BOTTLE FREE!
WE CONTINUOUSLY REDUCE WASTE IN EVERY AREA:
All food waste is composted
'Free food shelf' in the kitchen to minimise waste
Large recycling bins in all guest rooms, kitchen, lounge and hallways
The office and reception use double-sided printing and reuse when possible
Swap library for books in the TV room
Staples are bought in bulk to minimise packing and freight
We have offset the balance of our carbon output through the purchase of carbon offsets from certified programs.

Regular maintenance checks
Reminders to use the half-flush when possible and not to let the tap running
HABITAT'S BACKPACKING BEES
Bees are industrious pollinators who make a huge impact on the production of vegetables for human and animal consumption. Sadly, in the last decade bee population has been drastically declining.
We want to help reinvigorate local bee population, by looking after thousands of them in our very own beehives. In return, they produce fresh honey to treat our guests… enjoy it for breakfast, straight from the hive!
